COP 26:The Race is on to reach net zero emissions

At the just-concluded  COP26  in Glasgow, world leaders gathered to elevate their ambitions on how to tackle the climate crisis, the conference has called for changing prevailing narratives around climate change apathy into action, and fatalism into optimism.

The below infographic from Aljazeera explains the ultimate goals of the event delegations

Global net zero and 1.5C: Nations are being called on to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and to keep to the 1.5C warming limit. To reach these targets by 2050, countries will need to phase out coal, invest in renewable energy, curtail deforestation and switch to using electric vehicles.

In the summit, World leaders from more than 100 countries, including the U.S., China and Brazil, agreed to a deal aimed at ending and then reversing deforestation by 2030, committing nearly $20 billion of public and private funds to protect and restore forests.

Protect communities and natural habitats: States are being encouraged to protect and restore ecosystems, as well as build defences, warning systems and resilient infrastructure to avoid the loss of lives, homes and livelihoods.

Mobilise finance: The Paris Agreement set a goal of providing finance to developing countries to tackle climate change. At this year’s summit, developed nations are being told to act on their promise to give at least $100bn in climate finance per year from 2020 to help secure global net-zero emissions. It is a funding target now likely to be reached by 2023.

Collaboration: At COP26, parties will need to finalise the Paris Rulebook, which sets out the steps needed to realise the Paris Agreement. Governments, businesses and civil society will need to work collaboratively to deliver these climate goals.

This is humanity’s race to net-zero emissions and quest to achieve the sustainable economy craved by all.  This cannot be a race of separate survival growth and separate goals. This is one race, and everyone needs to win.

The core duty of Natural Eco Capital is to work with all stakeholders responsible for building strong climate resilience towards achieving these net zero emissions. At COP 26, the company Team were present and also participated in side events and some other activities from the beginning of this largest climate change conference held in Glasgow UK.
