Natural Eco Capital Launches Foundational GHG Accounting Course

21 Apr, 2026 | | By: Rantiola Akinola

Natural Eco Capital today announced the successful commencement of its Foundational Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting Course, a two‑day capacity‑building program designed to strengthen skills in emissions measurement, reporting, and climate action.

The program opened with remarks from Dr. Eugene Itua, CEO of Natural Eco Capital, who emphasised that accurate and reliable emissions data is the cornerstone of credible climate action. He noted that organisations cannot quantify their true emissions, design meaningful reduction strategies, or align with global expectations without strong data systems. Dr. Itua also underscored the importance of aligning with leading global frameworks such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the Task Force on Climate‑related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), ISO 14064, and the Global Protocol for Community‑Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC).

He further explained that the course is designed to help participants understand greenhouse gas sources, scopes, emission factors, and activity data, supported by real‑world examples and hands‑on exercises. Dr. Itua reaffirmed Natural Eco Capital’s mission of driving a more sustainable and resilient economy through improved climate literacy and stronger emissions accountability.

Course Highlights

Day 1 of the training covers the foundational concepts of greenhouse gas accounting, including an introduction to the science of greenhouse gases, a detailed explanation of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, an overview of emission factors and activity data, and sector‑specific examples supported by interactive exercises.

Day 2 shifts to practical application, guiding participants through building a GHG inventory, using calculation toolkits, completing a simple carbon footprint exercise, and understanding global reporting frameworks such as CDP, SBTi, TCFD, ISO 14064, and GPC.

Participants in the two‑day foundational course are drawn from J‑EM Envipet and Lagos Business School, Pan‑Atlantic University

The Masterclass, which begins on Wednesday, will feature participants from a wider range of organisations.

The training reflects Natural Eco Capital’s continued leadership in advancing climate action across Africa. As a member of the UN Global Compact, the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN), the Circular Economy Club, the Climate Chain Coalition, and the Nigerian Environmental Conservation Association (NECA), the organisation remains committed to supporting institutions in meeting global climate expectations.

The program concludes tomorrow with an integration session, a post‑course assessment, and the issuance of certificates.
